A little background
Of the three islands which collectively make up the Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman is the largest and most well-known. Home to attractions like Seven Mile Beach, the Mastic Trail, and the underwater Grand Canyon, its no wonder the island is so popular. With so many activities on Grand Cayman, many visitors are surprised to find out that the island is actually quite small, measuring in at only 22 miles long and 8 miles wide. Despite its small size, there is no "crowded" feeling which has become synonymous with beaches and resort towns in the US. JetBlue serves Grand Cayman with nonstop service from New York (JFK) 5 days per week.
Possibly the most famous experience for travelers in Grand Cayman is Stingray City. After a 45-minute boat trip to a sandbar, travelers get into the waist-deep water and as if on cue, stingrays begin to flock to the boat. Because stingrays have come to associate the sound of a boat's engine with tourists eager to feed them, you are almost guaranteed to be able to feed stingrays. Stingrays, while having an intimidating sounding name, are harmless and actually quite friendly as long as they are not lifted out of the water.
Few places in the world can compare to Grand Cayman when it comes to diving. One of Grand Cayman's most famous sites to dive is known as the underwater Grand Canyon - home to healthy coral reef formations, swim-through caves, and abundant sea-life. Many dive shops in the area offer scuba and snorkeling tours with knowledgeable and experienced guides and instructors. Diving at the underwater Grand Canyon is perfect for swimmers of all experience levels - even beginners!
Seven Mile Beach
Located on the western shore of Grand Cayman lies Seven Mile Beach - a public beach with fine, dazzling white sand and crystal clear blue water - that is seven miles long! Because it is a public beach, visitors can walk the entire length of the beach, regardless of which hotel they are staying at. Seven Mile Beach hosts a variety of activities for the entire family to enjoy, including parasailing and snorkeling in addition to swimming and, of course, working on that tan.
Go Back in Time
Dating back over 100 years, the Mastic Trail on Grand Cayman runs through parts of the largest contiguous dry, tropical forest remaining in the Cayman Islands. The forest is home to a number of animals and plants unique to the area - including some species of trees which have vanished from the rest of the West Indies due to deforestation. The Mastic Trail traverses a wide variety of habitats - including wetlands and abandoned agricultural land, as well as extensive ancient dry-forest. The Mastic Trail actually traverses the highest point on Grand Cayman, rising 75 feet above sea level.
Whether you want to turn up at a night club, relax at a wine bar, enjoy a drink on the beach, or just stroll along the soft white sands of Seven Mile Beach, your Grand Cayman vacation has just the perfect evening in store for you. Grand Cayman comes alive at night, with music such as jazz, calypso, and the latest chart-hits filtering through the air. Add that to a warm island breeze, and you've got the setup for a perfect night out on the town.
