A little background
Located on the northwestern coast of Puerto Rico, Aguadilla was established by Spanish loyalists fleeing from the Haitian invasion of Spanish Hispaniola in 1822. By the late 19th century the settlement grew into an important port until it was heavily damaged by the San Fermin earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Still, the town is known for its world-class surf activities and golf courses, attracting visitors with its natural beauty and rich history.
Old Aguadilla lighthouse ruins
The old Aguadilla lighthouse was built in 1889 by the Spanish. Before being leveled by the earthquake in 1918, the lighthouse illuminated the entrance to the Mona Passage. It was an elaborate brick structure with a living area for the light-keeper. Even though there's not much left of the structure today, it is a must-see spot for a breathtaking beach views and beautiful photographs. A new lighthouse was built in 1922 by the US Coast Guard at a site a little more to the north-east in Aguadilla.
If you and your surfboard are inseparable, there's more than one place where you can catch big waves. You'll get the most of your adventure between November and April, which is the local surfing season. Some great surfing spots you must check out include Crashboat Beach, Wilderness Beach in Aguadilla, Surfer Beach in Punta Borinquen, and Jobos Beach and Shacks Beach located between Aguacate and Isabela. During the summer when the waves are calm, northwestern beaches are perfect for windsurfing and snorkeling.
Located about 45 miles off the west coast of Puerto Rico, Mona Island is a favored destination for adventure travelers. Previously inhabited by Tainos and visited by Christopher Columbus and Juan Ponce de Leon, the uninhabited island was later used as a hideout place for pirates. Legend has it that there is still treasure buried on the island. Still, the greatest treasure of Mona Island is the surrounding coral reefs and marine life. The clear blue waters allow an underwater visibility from 150 to 200 feet, making Mona Island a perfect spot for diving. Remember to acquire a permit, enough food and other supplies for a diving trip to Mona Island.
Rincon beach town
Located just 30 minutes away from Aguadilla, Rincon became a world-known surfing spot after hosting the International Surfing Championships in 1968. The town has several neighborhoods, each with its unique characteristics. The northern part is Puntas, a hill that overlooks some of the area's best surfing spots. Towards the south is Balneario de Rincon, where you will find restaurants with casual and authentic fare.
