“It’s about two years now since I first met with Senator Schumer to propose service to Upstate New York,” said David Neeleman, JetBlue’s CEO. “We made a commitment to him and to New York State that we would serve three Upstate cities within 18 months of service. We started flying to Buffalo in February, 2000 and are now the fourth largest carrier in that market. In August, 2000, we added service to Rochester and now we’re proud to be the second biggest carrier in the city. Today, we complete our promise, ahead of schedule, with service to Syracuse where we hope our low fares and superior service will have Syracusans calling us number one in no time.”
“Syracuse can now call itself home to the most advanced, most affordable airline in the nation,” said US Senator Charles E. Schumer. “After years of paying sky high fares, Syracuse today joins Buffalo and Rochester in boasting a top of the line air carrier befitting a city of its size and importance. By fulfilling the pledge he made to me that JetBlue would be flying to Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo within its first 18 months, David Neeleman has conclusively proven once and for all that he is a man of his word.”
New York Governor George Pataki said “JetBlue's inaugural flight from Syracuse to JFK is great news, not only for air travelers, but for the business community throughout Upstate New York. For too many years, prohibitively high airfares in Upstate acted as a real barrier to business travelers and tourists alike. JetBlue's investment here in New York is helping to remove that barrier once and for all, reducing costs and enticing more employers to locate their operations here.”
“I'm pleased to welcome JetBlue's entry into the Syracuse market,” said Congressman James T. Walsh. “Our recently-established Central New York Air Service Task Force identified JetBlue as a needed component in our efforts to expand jet service, increase competition, and lower airfares for our community. JetBlue's affordable pricing and high quality service is a welcomed addition.”
“JetBlue is an important addition to the Syracuse community," said Mayor Roy A. Bernardi, "Their combination of quality service and low cost is a model for other airlines. JetBlue's arrival in Syracuse will be welcomed by business and vacation travelers alike.”
“This community has worked hard toward enhancing airline service and competition at Hancock International Airport,” said County Executive Nicholas Pirro. “I would encourage the community to support JetBlue to ensure that Onondaga County travelers have the flight options that JetBlue has afforded other communities.”
“JetBlue represents a new era of low-cost, high quality jet service at Syracuse Hancock International Airport,” said Charles R. Everett Jr., Commissioner of Aviation. “Central New Yorkers will now enjoy jet access and low fares to New York City and many destinations beyond. The airport and the community are very excited."
From its base at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York City’s most on-time airport, JetBlue also flies six times daily to Fort Lauderdale, FL; five times daily to Buffalo and Rochester, NY; four times daily to Orlando, FL; three times daily to Tampa, FL; twice daily to San Francisco/Oakland, CA, West Palm Beach, FL and Burlington, VT; and daily to Los Angeles/Ontario, CA, Salt Lake City, UT, Seattle, WA, and Fort Myers, FL. On May 17, JetBlue will begin operating a daily flight to Denver, CO and add a second daily flight to Ontario, CA.
JetBlue now operates 72 flights a day with a fleet of 13 brand new, environmentally-friendly Airbus A320 aircraft, outfitted with roomy all-leather seats each equipped with LiveTV, offering 24-channel satellite television at every seat. LiveTV is available free of charge to all JetBlue passengers. In 2001, JetBlue will take delivery of eight more brand new Airbus A320 aircraft.
